My main research area is the realistic rendering of 3D images.  The core is accurately simulating the flow of light in an environment using various (often Monte Carlo) algorithms, but also touches on modeling of materials, light sources, and geometry, visual perception, fast ray tracing, and special techniques for interactive applications (on the CPU or GPU).
